The time had come for Carter to get his hair cut.

He was thrilled.

But hey, when your mom dresses you up in some hot plastic nightgown looking thingy and begins squishing your head like a half inflated volleyball while holding this huge buzzing hair shredder with big teeth right by your ear... well, perhaps the look on his face is understandable :)

A World of Water

Our recent journey to Thailand found water to be very much part of the experience. From earning 'merit' by 'washing' temples to soaking one another during the Songkran water festival, it seems there was water everywhere. Here's a short clip with a water theme.

Clouds

A day outside working in the yard. Ahhhh. I love being outside. As we stoked up a bonfire this afternoon, Sarah mentioned sleeping in my backpacking tent this evening. She didn't 'push' it, just kind of mentioned it casually. So I surprised the girls just before bedtime and asked them to help me set it up. They both squealed.

Though the excursion didn't last more than an hour, as we were laying there, staring up through the mesh at the darkening sky, Sarah asked:

Dad, how did God make clouds?

What an awesome question. I answered her,

He spoke them into being.

Isn't that incredible? Isn't that amazing? Doesn't that blow your mind? He spoke them into being! I've said it before, I can't even get a dog to sit, while God speaks things into existence. Wow. He is worthy of our worship.

Pillars

Over the years, some things I have been told (or came to believe) were true about the world have turned out to be false. Some of those things I truly believed. Others I simply accepted. I was thinking about those things the other day.

Many of these things are perhaps 'generational'. The world my parents and grand parents knew is radically different than the one my children inherit. Still, some of their assumptions about the world influenced me - which is a good thing. That said, their world evolved.

Take this for instance: getting in on the ground floor, working your way up the ranks and staying with that company for all of your working career. You'll be successful, secure and be taken care of in retirement.

Sure.

What about these?

- The Big 3 will always be around
- The church is a safe place
- An education will always pay off
- I live in a christian nation

Even looking at that short list I see how myopic my world view has been. I opened talking about how the 'world' has changed! Isn't it crazy how easily we get sucked into believing that what we're experiencing is reality in the 'world' :) I'm poking fun at myself here if you didn't pick up on that :) Thank God I've been blessed to travel.

Still, experience in my current little corner of the world is indeed drastically different than that of just a lifetime ago. For most of my life, I've been a skeptic. So a dirty little part of me rejoices in all this. At the same time however, having the pillars of 'reality' quashed year after year can leave you a little restless – or even hopeless.

Though I'm sure there are much more eloquent ways to say this, it seems downright silly to me to continue making choices in life based on perceived realities of something that will change – again. Seriously consider, not just in passing fancy, but seriously consider how it is that living in the Kingdom of God should alter what we have considered to be real, to be true.

Now that I've written this post, I'm going to specifically consider my bullet point list above in light of the Kingdom.
